This digital exhibit features answers to the question, "How do you do Public Humanities?", posed by the Public Humanities Network for the 2022 CHCI Annual Meeting. Partner centers and institutes submitted media highlighting their public-facing efforts as well as individual projects. 34th Avenue Oral History, Society of Fellows and Heyman Center for the Humanities, Columbia University (Bridget Bartolini, Public Humanities Fellow)

Stretching 1.3 miles through Jackson Heights, Queens, the 34th Avenue Open Street closes to vehicular traffic each morning and allows residents to jog, stroll, bike, and socialize while maintaining physical distance, without fear of cars. This new gathering space, initiated during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, has also presented opportunities for local entrepreneurs and artists to creatively pivot to sustain their livelihoods. 34th Avenue Oral History Project is documenting the story of this remarkable street as it unfolds.

Making a Village, a digital zine (Andy Goodman, Studio Director, New Urban Arts)

Learning more about American Jewry has meant deep diving into my own ancestral past. I have been working for the last two years to artistically embody the confusion and fragmentation of traumatic family history. A history riffled with blank spaces. Working with color, language, Yiddish books and family artifacts to find my place in a legacy of survivors, genocide and silence. Using Saidiya Hartman's writings as a compass, I realize these gaps are places that hold knowledge; and this is the territory of my new visual work. These gaps point to systematic erasure, silenced people, and genocide. What seems to arise quickly in my family history is amnesia: the forgetting of my ancestral home of Kidule, Lithiniana and the full extent of my families’ connection to the Holocaust.

Humanities @ Home, Center for the Humanities & the Arts (CHA), CU Boulder (Jennifer Ho, Director)

This arts and humanities competition was held in response to the Boulder Shooting on March 22, 2021. CHA responds to the most pressing events happening in our community by providing arts and humanities as a venue for people to express themselves and to find healing and/or comfort and/or community.
