Durham, NC

Popularly known for its history as a center of the tobacco industry, Durham is today a progressive mid-sized city with a vibrant arts, cultural, and political scene. In addition to Duke, Durham is home to North Carolina Central University, one of the nation’s leading Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as the National Humanities Center. Highlights of the city’s cultural calendar include the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and American Dance Festival, both annual international events. In the lively and rapidly growing Downtown (adjacent to Duke’s East Campus), a heralded restaurant scene sits amidst landmarks of the historic Black Wall Street. Independent boutiques and book shops and a sizeable Farmers’ Market on weekends demonstrate the city’s unique character as it attracts new residents. For a deeper look into the politics of Durham’s ongoing transformations, we recommend these columns by the Whiting Award-winning writer, poet, and critic Alexis Pauline Gumbs.
