Zoom: Best Practices

Back to Meeting Overview

For all attendees:

  • Make sure your Zoom app is up-to-date.
  • If you haven’t done so in a while, restart your computer, which can help clear out update requests.
  • Make sure you know the correct time for the event in the program for registrants. Note that all times are in ET.
  • If you’re not using a wired Internet connection, place yourself somewhere with a strong signal strength.
  • If connecting from home, ask others in your household to minimize their use of streaming services during your presentation.
  • Close any applications on your computer you don’t need for your presentation.
  • Shut down your email app, or at the very least, turn off any notification sounds that might disrupt your participation.
  • Check out the appearance of your background and make sure your light source is coming from in front of your face instead of behind your head (so your face is not in shadows).

For hosts and presenters:

  • If you plan to share your screen for any part of the session, test this function the day before the event and again just after installing any Zoom updates. Close out any tabs on your web browser and any documents on your desktop that you wouldn’t want an audience of strangers and professional colleagues to see.
  • If sharing slides or other materials, send a copy to a host or fellow panelist in case you have technical difficulties.
  • Develop a plan for communicating with hosts and fellow panelists if your tech fails.
