International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) Call for Late-Breaking Submissions, Surabaya, Indonesia

The International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) is gathering in Surabaya as a Conference-Festival (ConFest) from 28 July – 1 August 2024. Don’t miss this opportunity to reconnect in person with your colleagues in the field of Asian Studies! ICAS is a global, immersive platform enabling individuals and institutions to come together to exchange views on a variety of issues pertaining to Asia. The meeting attracts participants from all continents to engage in interdisciplinary dialogues on Asia that transcend boundaries between academic disciplines, knowledge sectors and geographic regions.
The meeting will take place at the campus of Universitas Airlangga and at various venues throughout the city of Surabaya, Indonesia. As a major maritime hub, Surabaya has long acted as a crossroads of peoples, ideas and goods. Today, it is a bustling metropolis and a gateway to the eastern part of Indonesia and Oceania, where modern skyscrapers scramble with canals and buildings from the colonial era and where people from different parts of Indonesia live alongside descendants of Chinese, Arab and Malay settlers in the city’s vibrant neighborhoods/kampungs.

The ConFest model represents a new phase in our efforts to re-imagine the academic conference for the post-COVID-19 era. We are convinced that in spite of the expediency of digital platforms, in-person academic events are still important. In order to ensure an engaging conference experience rooted in the local context, ICAS 13 will offer ample opportunities not only for academic exchange in traditional conference venues but also for exciting workshops, excursions and events embedded within the kinetic urban setting of Surabaya.

ICAS 13 is now accepting a limited number of Late-Breaking Paper, Poster, Panel and Roundtable proposals for inclusion at ICAS 13

The ICAS 13 Organising Committee would like to invite proposals in the Late-Breaking track on new research, recent developments and trending topics in Asian Studies that have arisen during the one-year period prior to ICAS 13. This Late-Breaking track offers an opportunity for discussion and exchange on novel and high-profile research for which the timeliness of sharing this research with the Asian Studies community is important. All topical areas spanning the Asian Studies field are encouraged to submit, including cross-cutting topics and those that reach beyond disciplines traditionally represented at ICAS.

Panels should consist of 3-5 presenters, and roundtables should consist of 5-8 participants. Participants already on the programme are welcome to participate in a late-breaking organised panel session in addition to their own session (the ICAS 13 ‘one presentation’ rule does not apply for Late-Breaking panel sessions). When you organise a panel or roundtable proposal for a Late-Breaking session, please ensure that all prospective session participants have agreed to participate in the session before submitting your proposal.

Proposals should be submitted in our online proposal system at your earliest convenience, and no later than Wednesday 15 May 2024, 23.59 (GMT +7). The conference language is English.

Following a review process, the decision is communicated to the submitters within ten days after their submission. Participants whose contributions are accepted in the Late-Breaking track will be given the opportunity to confirm their participation by 5 June 2024 to be included in the ICAS 13 programme and can register for the regular registration fee rate until 15 July 2024.
