The Humanities Center at Wayne State University hosts successful CCKF-CHCI Summer Institute, "Space in Two Cities: Detroit and Shenyang"
Earlier this month, the Humanities Center at Wayne State University concluded a two-week long summer institute, sponsored by CHCI and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange (CCKF), comparing the use and reuse of space in Detroit and Shenyang.
The CCKF-CHCI Summer Institutes are opportunities designed for scholars to organize an expansive series of events on the general topic of “Chinese Studies and Global Humanities.”
The 2019 CHCI-CCKF Summer Institute–titled "Space in Two Cities: Detroit and Shenyang" and organized by Haiyong Liu–was truly global in scope. From June 22 to July 6, participants explored space as a concept, analyzed the construction and deconstruction of space, and interrogated the multifaceted meanings associated with specific spaces. The program featured lectures, film and documentary screenings, guided tours, and two online dialogues between community members of Detroit and Shenyang. A full program can be found on their website.
Reflecting on the two weeks of events, Haiyong Liu concluded that, "the interdisciplinary scholarly exchange, dialogues of people on both sides of the Pacific, and life experiences shared by people from all walks of life not only enriched our understanding of Detroit and Shenyang, but also provided us with insights regarding the miracle of cross-cultural communication in general." In the coming months, the IDEAS section of our website will feature reflective essays by Haiyong Liu and participants of the Summer Institute.
The 2019 CCKF-CHCI Summer Institute website has a rich collection of materials, photographs and videos, and a day-by-day account of the various activities. Below is a slideshow of some of the highlights from the Summer Institute at the Humanities Center at Wayne State University.
