Public Humanities Network Town Hall & Workshop

A recent Public Humanities Network workshop was held on Thursday, April 27 at 2 pm EDT and hosted by Dr. Lesley-Ann Noel. A recording is now available (Youtube), and also below.

In this workshop, Dr. Lesley-Ann Noel will lead participants through discussion and reflection on design and its relationship with other disciplines including the public humanities. During the workshop, participants will learn about key design mindsets and the design process and will apply these to their own work.

A rapid mediated design sprint across interdisciplinary teams focusing on issues of diversity and inclusion in the public humanities will provide an opportunity for participants to practice these new design abilities and tangibly demonstrate the design process. The workshop will close with a critique on the process and mindsets that participants used.

Professor Noel is an assistant professor in the Department of Design Studies at North Carolina State University and practices design through emancipatory, critical, and anti-hegemonic lenses, focusing on equity, social justice, and the experiences of people who are often excluded from research. She also attempts to promote greater critical awareness among designers and design students by introducing critical theory concepts and vocabulary into the design studio, e.g. through The Designer’s Critical Alphabet. Professor Noel is also co-chair of the Pluriversal Design Special Interest Group of the Design Research Society.

The last Public Humanities Network Town Hall was held on Monday, Feb. 13 at 2 pm. The recording is available here (Youtube) and embedded below.

The CHCI 2023 Annual Meeting will be hosted by the Interdisciplinary Center for the Studies of Philosophy, Arts, and Humanities at the University of Chile from June 20-24 2023. The schedule includes a session on the public humanities, currently scheduled for Wednesday, June 21 from 3-4:30 pm Santiago time, that will integrate the network into the meeting’s daily program. In addition, there will be virtual access and simultaneous translation in person between Spanish and English for participants. The theme of the meeting is 'Commociones,' the dimensions of which are described here. Given the place and subject we also encourage you to engage with your colleagues in Latin American centers and institutes if, as is the case in many instances, these areas are administered separately from your center or institute.
