About

Launched in 2010, the Kule Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) is an endowed research center at the University of Alberta with a mandate to become a leading international site of interdisciplinary and comparative research. It seeks to foster an innovative intellectual environment for the study of major modern and historical, political, social, economic, and cultural issues and, therein, advances society and global polity in a manner consistent with the high humanitarian ideals of the founding benefactors, Drs. Peter and Doris Kule.

KIAS will provide research support for scholars across the humanities, social sciences, and the fine arts to enable them to explore issues related to the three themes that provide the focus for the institute’s first three-year research cycle (2011-2013): Stewardship of the Planet; Place, Belonging, and Otherness; and Culture, Media, Technology. KIAS is also dedicated to establishing cooperative arrangements with leading international universities and research institutes and centers.
