About
The Cogut Institute for the Humanities at Brown University advances collaborative research and curricular innovation in the humanities and across the University.
The institute’s annual fellowship program brings together faculty, postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate fellows from Brown to explore work-in-progress in a dynamic workshop setting that enriches individual research and cultivates a community of scholars.
The institute fosters the development of innovative interdisciplinary or team-taught courses at all levels and offers two doctoral certificate programs, in collaborative humanities and digital humanities, that prepare advanced students for scholarship in the world today.
The institute is home to two centers. Its newly launched Center for Environmental Humanities builds upon a vibrant existing community at Brown University invested in local and global environmental questions, and the Center for the Study of the Early Modern World explores early globalization and its legacies.
The institute also hosts faculty-led initiatives on disability studies, economies of aesthetics, global humanities, and political concepts.
A rich array of programming — conferences, lecture series, and colloquia — enhances the institute’s core research and curricular mission, creating a lively space of inquiry and dialogue that draws in faculty, students, and members of the larger Providence community.
