CCKF-CHCI 2020 Summer Institute in Chinese Studies and Global Humanities - Call for Proposals

The Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI) and the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange (CCKF) have renewed their collaborative program to support an annual Summer Institute on the topic of “Chinese Studies and Global Humanities.” The renewed collaboration, funded with a US$105,000 grant from the CCKF and US$45,000 from the CHCI, will support one Summer Institute each year for three years beginning in 2019. Thus, US$50,000 total ($35,000 from CCKF and $15,000 from CHCI) is available to support each of the three Summer Institutes.

The Summer Institutes will invite established scholars from different CHCI regions as speakers to share their insights and experiences with participating junior scholars. The host organization and the precise topic of the institute will vary each year. CHCI member organizations will propose institutes according to the guidelines below; the selection of each year’s host will be made by the CHCI International Advisory Board about a year in advance of each institute.

Deadline and Timing

Updated: the extended deadline to submit proposals is October 15, 2019. The 2020 Summer Institute should be scheduled to take place between June 1 and August 31, 2020.

The CHCI International Advisory Board will appoint a board subcommittee to consider the applications and will notify applicants of the results of their deliberations by early November, 2019.

How to apply?

Any humanities center or institute anywhere in the world with CHCI membership in good standing may apply for funding to plan and host the 2020 Summer Institute. Individual faculty members interested in developing a proposal are encouraged to contact their humanities center or institute to apply (the current list of CHCI member-centers is found at https://chcinetwork.org/members).

Applicants are asked to fill out the form below, including a brief description of the topic/theme of the proposed Summer Institute; a general outline of the program including types of sessions (lectures, roundtables, workshops, etc.); names of speakers/consultants to be invited to participate; and a tentative budget including proposed matching funds offered by the host institution.

The committee is particularly interested in proposals that involve:

  • The inclusion and mentoring of junior scholars as integral to the event
  • A variety of session formats, including roundtable discussions, field trips, film screenings, and/or training sessions.
  • International topics and roster of participants
  • Humanistic approach to an interdisciplinary theme
  • A vision for collective work, rather than a traditional conference or colloquium
  • Collaboration of more than one CHCI member organization in planning

The foregoing items are not requirements but may be viewed as suggestions.

The three past CCKF-CHCI Summer Institutes (see below), provide examples of successful proposals, although they should not prevent applicants from envisioning new approaches and themes. On June 19, 2019, organizers of past CCKF-CHCI Summer Institutes will participate in a special session at the CHCI Annual Meeting in Dublin.

We expect but do not require that the host institution would commit $15,000 of its own resources, some of which could come from in-kind contributions.

CHCI expects the hosting institution to submit a report on the event approximately two months following the completion of the Summer Institute.
