Call for Applications: ‘Supporting Knowledge and Mapping Regional Connections: China and Contemporary Development in the Arab World’.
The University of Exeter's Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS), in conjunction with the Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) and InterAsia Partnership (IAP), invites applicants for Early Career research fellowships focused on examining China’s relationship to the Arab countries of the Middle East. The project is supported by Carnegie Corporation of New York and led by Professor Adam Hanieh (IAIS).
Successful applicants will investigate a topic of their choice related to the project theme and will be expected to produce a working paper and academic journal article over the two-year course of the project. They will receive mentorship and support for their research, including attendance at two, in-person, Research Institutes (4-6 days in length) convened in Beirut, Lebanon. All expenses for these institutes will be covered by the project. A modest stipend will also be made available for fieldwork. Eligibility Criteria and Application Process:Applicants can be of any citizenship and should hold a PhD or have equivalent experience in a related academic discipline. PhD students close to completing their study are also eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants within 7 years of their PhD.Research outputs will be in English, with preference shown to applicants with Arabic and/or Mandarin language skills.
To apply, interested applicants must submit an application on the ACSS Applications Platform. On this platform, applicants must select the chapter titled ‘China and Contemporary Development in the Arab World Early Career Research Fellowship’. In addition, applicants must submit: (1) a 1-to-2 page proposal describing your proposed research topic, its significance, and methodology, (2) a CV, and (3) a published academic article or work-in-progress (in English, up to 10,000 words in length).
