Design Justice AI Post-Institute, May 8

Dear CHCI Colleagues:
Please share this news of an upcoming hybrid event sponsored by Mellon-CHCI. On Th May 8, 2025 at 302 Murray Hall on the Rutgers campus (and virtually), the DESIGN JUSTICE AI team concludes last July’s Global Humanities Institute with a post-institute symposium that features four panels from our continuing research on the topic.
Join us at 10 am Eastern for Vukosi Marivate (Pretoria) and Happy Buzaaba (Princeton) discussing “Why the Local Matters” (on “low-resource” African languages in NLP); at noon for members of the Design Justice Network describing their community-facing approach to technology (lunch served for those who join in person); at 2pm for Dalaki Livingston (Utah) and Chloë Kitzinger (Rutgers) on design justice ontologies as inspired by Indigenous thinking and Dostoevsky; and at 4pm for Webb Keane (Michigan) and Lauren Goodlad/Matthew Stone (Rutgers) on new humanities ideas from anthropology and comparative literature for “benchmarking” machine intelligence. The full schedule and links for virtual registration are here.
If you are close to the New York/New Jersey area, you and your colleagues may also wish to join us on Friday May 9, 2025 for an exciting in-person, public-facing, and family-friendly celebration at the Zimmerli Art Museum to learn how art and intellect can temper technology. The DESIGN JUSTICE AI DiscoTECH is a high-tech science fair but with music, art, community-building and plenty of time for questions and comments. Kids are welcome! Our special guests at this event are Rutgers’ inaugural DESIGN JUSTICE LAB Fellows, ten undergraduate students from across campus who will showcase research projects devoted to exploring technology from design justice standpoints. The event kicks off with a keynote from artist Molly Crabapple at 11:30 am Eastern; the DiscoTECH runs from 2-6pm (snacks will be served).

Yours very truly,
