About

The mission of the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation is to enrich and enhance literature and language at Hendrix College. It does this through such programs as the Visiting Writer Series, Creative Writing Program, Writing Center, literary research trips, language enrichment activities, summer immersion programs, study abroad in literature and language, and playwriting and dramaturgy opportunities.    The foundation’s core program, the Murphy Scholars Program in Literature and Language, enables a select cohort of students from all majors to go deeper and study more intensively in literature and language. Murphy Scholars receive dedicated resources in the form of mentorship and a study-travel allowance to pursue their literary and language-related interests. They take Oxford-style tutorials, carry out projects in literature and language, and bond as a community of scholars on campus. The Scholars are mentored by a cohort of postgraduate Visiting Fellows, who not only lend program support but also teach in the departments of English, Languages, and Theatre.   The Bertie Wilson Murphy Building serves as a campus hub for these activities, providing on-campus lodging for visiting writers, theatre directors, and lecturers as well as inviting spaces for students and faculty to gather.   Learn more at the foundation’s website.
