About

The Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy (CRMEP) is the leading centre for postgraduate level study and doctoral research in Continental Philosophy in the UK. Since its inception in 1994 it has developed a national and international reputation for teaching, research and publication in the field of post-Kantian European philosophy, characterised by a strong emphasis on broad cultural and intellectual contexts and a distinctive sense of social and political engagement.

In each of the last two research assessment exercises, RAE 2008 and REF2014, around 65% of the research activities of the CRMEP were judged either 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent', with 25% of its ouputs for REF2014 judged 'world-leading'.

The CRMEP runs a PhD programme, a MPhilStud and four MA programmes, the MA in Modern European Philosophy, the MA in Contemporary European Philosophy (a European MA run jointly with the University of Paris 8), the MA in Aesthetics and Art Theory, and the MA in Philosophy and Contemporary Critical Theory. There are normally 40-50 MA students and 30-35 PhD students enrolled in CRMEP programmes.

CRMEP members participate in a wide range of research events, and the Centre also hosts a regular series of research seminars, workshops and international conferences.

Alumni of the Centre work in a wide range of university disciplines and in art and other cultural institutions both in the UK and across Europe.
