The 2003 annual meeting of CHCI was organized by the Humanities Center in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University.The theme of the conference was “The Humanities and Moral Authority,” and the panels included “Disciplines,” “Disinterest,” “Scholarly Publishing,” “Challenges: The Humanities Center in the 21stCentury,” and “Provocations: The Humanities and the World Today.” The conference also featured a panel of University and College Deans of the Humanities. Two keynote speakers addressed the participants: Alexander Nehamas’ (Princeton University) speech was titled “What Moral Authority?” and Judith Butler’s (UC Berkeley) “Precarious Life.” Marjorie Garber (Harvard University) delivered a “pre-note” address, titled “Material-Culture Wars.”
