Deadline: December 1, 2009
As part of the Life Long Learning Programme European Commission funded three year Intensive Program: Cosmopolitanism and Diversity in the Humanities and Europe: Mapping Intersections and Creating Synergy, The Centre for the Humanities, Utrecht University, will host the three-week interdisciplinary course entitled Cosmopolitanism, Peace and Conflict from January 25 – February 12, 2010. The Intensive Programme is supported by the Utrecht City Council Programme to commemorate the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713 and will play a leading role in the educational activities around this event. The 2010 Intensive Programme is an interdisciplinary session aimed at PhDs and Research master’s students, that covers both social and cultural theory, philosophy, law and legal studies, international relations, race and ethnicity and gender studies. The IP is grounded in outreach projects in local communities as well as trans-national knowledge practices.
Issues linked to ultra-nationalism and fear of ethnic others are gathering momentum across the European Union. The recent parliamentary election in June 2009 showed once again the popularity of the nationalist parties in European politics. Centre-right and right-winged Euro-skeptical parties with agenda’s to limit cross-border migration and to wage national and cultural value wars on the globalizing world, doubled their mandates. In response to these narrow agendas, issues linked to trans-national citizenship and to Europe as a space of conviviality and cosmopolitanism are more relevant than ever today. The state of perpetual war advanced democracies are in adds an extra dimension to this discussion.
Within the Intensive Programme, these concepts will be debated in an academic setting and analysed in depth with the help of teams of highly qualified academics. We believe that sharing knowledge with them on these topics will add an important dimension to our understanding of the issues. Among the already confirmed renowned academics participating i the Intensive Programme are Prof. Ido de Haan (Utrecht University), Prof. Patrick Hanafin (Birkbeck, University of London) and Prof. Judith Butler (Berkeley, University of California).
The Intensive Programme ‘Cosmopolitanism, peace and conflict’ gives the participants the unique possibility to acquire advanced knowledge in the field and to exchange your views and opinions with people from a wide range of countries and backgrounds, by offering trans-national and interdisciplinary approaches drawn from the humanities, social sciences, law, philosophy and international relations. Its focus on the development of cross-national European perspectives in these areas, allows for the innovative use of key notions of cosmopolitanism and diversity as bridge-makers across different national, cultural and disciplinary traditions.
